Examples of Uber Sexual Abuse
Any unwanted sexual comments, gestures, or actions could be considered sexual abuse.
These include:
- Attempting to touch, kiss, or sexually penetrate another person
- Displaying indecent or obscene materials
- Exposing one’s self
- Making inappropriate comments or gestures
- Recording or taking indecent pictures without consent
- Soliciting sex acts
- Staring or leering
In 2023, a woman reported to Uber that her driver diverged from their planned route, took her to a hotel, and raped her. And though Uber safety features like automatic messages expressing concern for the passenger did kick in, they weren’t enough to prevent the abuse.
Uber has consistently tried to downplay the number of sexual assaults by including only the most serious types, such as attempted rape, in its company reports. Uber categorized 75% of sexual abuse cases, including masturbation and threats of rape, as “less serious.”
Statistics on Sexual Assaults by Uber Drivers
Recent documents obtained from The New York Times reveal that Uber sexual assault cases happen all too often. Uber received nearly half a million reports of sex abuse or misconduct between 2017 and 2021.
Other notable Uber sexual assault statistics include:
- In a recent survey, 35% of women felt unsafe when using rideshare services like Uber at night.
- The rate of reported sexual assaults by Uber drivers has been increasing since 2022, though the company has failed to acknowledge this.
- Women accounted for 81% of Uber sexual abuse victims.
Uber actively worked to downplay the number of rideshare sex assaults, reporting just 12,000 of the nearly half a million incidents publicly. Uber also launched major advertising campaigns promoting its safety despite knowing the high rate of sexual misconduct that was occurring.
You never deserved to face sexual harassment or assault from simply needing to get a ride. Yet Uber neglected to take this issue seriously, causing you and thousands of others to suffer needlessly.
Impact of Uber Sexual Abuse on Victims
Uber sexual abuse or mistreatment can leave victims with long-term or permanent trauma that they didn’t deserve.
Common issues survivors of Uber sexual abuse face include:
- Mental health issues like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Physical injuries like cuts, scrapes, or bruises due to the assault
- Risk of developing sexually transmitted diseases
- Trauma or stigma when reporting an assault to authorities
Even Uber’s so-called “less serious” cases of sexual harassment, such as threats of rape to unwanted flirting, can have lasting mental and emotional impacts on those who simply wanted a ride.
You deserve the highest-quality care and support if you’ve been sexually abused or mistreated by an Uber driver. Support groups, counseling from mental health professionals, and other resources can all go a long way toward helping you start to heal.

Company Response to Uber Sexual Abuse Allegations
Despite mounting evidence, Uber continues to downplay the seriousness of sexual abuse cases, which is dismissive of the suffering that you and hundreds of thousands of others may have experienced.
In August 2025, Uber released a statement defending its actions, stating that it had taken significant steps to keep riders safe. Yet part of its statement also claimed that unwanted flirting, staring, or inappropriate language “did not fall into the category of sexual assault” by the company’s definition, minimizing the harm that Uber’s drivers inflicted on passengers.
Recent reports found that Uber repeatedly failed to take more action to protect riders from sexual mistreatment. For instance, the company developed an algorithm that would allow female riders to only get a ride from female drivers, but delayed rolling it out due to fear of lawsuits.
It also proposed an idea to install cameras in cars, but the company deemed it not feasible since all Uber drivers are independent contractors.
“Inside Uber, the employees knew sexual abuse was an issue. They found patterns that they say are linked to sexual assault.”
— Emily Steel, reporter for The New York Times
Many believe that Uber’s approach to addressing the sexual abuse allegations has been reactive rather than proactive. To better protect victims, advocacy groups are proposing changes that would require mandated background checks for drivers, stricter penalties for offenders, and improved ways to report and prevent assault.
